World Veterinary Day

The theme of 2021 World Veterinary Day is “Veterinarian Response to the COVID-19 Crisis.” Our own, Dr. Vanessa Wise wrote some thoughts on practicing veterinary medicine during a pandemic and what she is looking forward to in the year to come.

What does being a veterinarian mean to you?
To me being a veterinarian means having the privilege and responsibility of caring for pets in wellness and illness, while also helping guide owners through the ups and downs of pet ownership. Being a veterinarian means dedicating yourself to doing everything you can to help animals have a high quality life for as long as possible. Being a veterinarian sometimes means having to make some tough calls but always being guided by what is best for the patient.

How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted your veterinary experience this year?
Working curbside has posed some interesting challenges and at times has made things difficult by having to rely on phone calls and not having owners present for exams. Some pets have been more anxious without their owners present but we do our best to give them extra love and treats and try and make them as comfortable as possible with our fear free techniques.

What are you looking forward to in the months ahead?
Continuing to serve the community and meeting new pets! Hopefully getting through the worst of allergy season and seeing our patient’s have more allergy relief in the summer months.
